Why do we collect ?

Why do we collect? What drives us to do such a thing....... the most simple question, but yet, one can't answer right away.

Maybe it got something meaningful to us, or perhaps it's the simple fact that we are naturally drawn to it; some love to observe the gear train running against each other, amazed by how it has been put together; some admire the craftsmanship of the late master who practiced their craft for a lifetime.

But sometimes, it's not even about the movement; a 100$ movement can be worth 1 million in the right circumstances; that just happened. The world of watches is full of surprises and things to be discovered, every day, we learn something new, and maybe that's why we love to collect. Or It's maybe an expression of ourselves; because, literally, watches are art, and to be even more accurate, it's art and science combined; not only does it has to look good, it has to work too.

Gears and wheels are calculated, with no room for error; each individual part has to work in sync and harmony, some cut by hand, some cut by a 200-year-old machine, and sometimes, the most simplest design is the hardest to come up with.

a Picasso painting in someone's eyes can inspire them, can drive them, but if you don't know Picasso, what's the point of all of this? Maybe that's why we collect; we are all explorers who never stop searching; maybe curiosity is the fuel that drives us; even if someone does not understand us, we still do it. Some said it is the food for the soul, things that make us sane, things only humans can experience; we created arts to serve this purpose, a vessel to hold the history and culture.

"Art is much less important than life, but what a pity life without it." -Robert Motherwell
